The Daily Dispatch for March 30, 2011 – Starry Mt. Kinabalu in Borneo

by on Mar.30, 2011, under everything, the daily dispatch

Climbing Mt Kinabalu at 3am and 12000 feet. The sky is amazing with a full moon guiding the hand over hand climb up the side of the mountain. The downside of climbing up a mountain at 3 in the morning? Even with a full moon, its REALLY dark. The headlamp only lights up a short distance ahead of you as you climb patiently and painfully into the dark. Borneo.

To get to the top of a volcano for sunrise you have to climb it in the dark. Coming up the mountain was incredibly eerie. Without my head lamp it was dark despite the moonlight shrouded in mist coming down the mountain at me. On a volcano behind me I could hear a raging thunderstorm with intermittent lightning lighting up my climb.
